Keto Apple Pie Margarita

When I posted my Keto Hard Apple Cider recipe a few weeks ago, while it is totally delicious on its own, I always intended for it to also be a building block for other recipes. Apples are typically such a no-no on a keto diet that once I had a way of introducing apple flavor to recipes without also adding sugar, it needed to be put to uses beyond just an apple-flavored substitute for wine. So, I did what we always do here in Southern Arizona — made margaritas. The Keto Apple Pie Margarita was born.

While unconventional, it’s a combination that makes sense. The style of hard cider I made for the Keto Hard Apple Cider post is very much a ultra dry apple wine. Since white wine margaritas are an actual thing, I reasoned that a Keto Apple Pie Margarita would be an easy adaptation to undertake. We can use tequila’s natural affinity for fruit in the same way that wine-a-ritas do.

There was no reason to stop there, though. It’s certainly true that during the holiday season, there are many desserts for which there is an equal or better low carb substitution. However, despite a lot of solid efforts, there is just no substitute for apple pie. We have always needed to be content with our keto pumpkin pie, leaving the apples to the carb eaters — but not anymore!

With a Keto Apple Pie Margarita, we have a pathway to those same flavors without the added sugar and artificial apple extract. If you haven’t read my Keto Hard Apple Cider post, now would be a good time to read it or review it.

You could certainly make this recipe with a dry store bought cider, but I can’t personally vouch for one brand and I don’t know of any that publish residual sugar numbers. Luckily, it is easy and cost effective to make your own (organic, even!), so you should read my how-to post.

The cinnamon was the hardest thing to get dialed in properly. My first few tries were either far too weak from not using a heavy enough hand with it or too strong because the drink sat for a bit and continued to (over) infuse the cinnamon. There’s unfortunately no way to speed that process up and the solution is good old patience. I’d leave at least 20 minutes from the point that you mix the drink until you serve it for the best results.

You can use that time to rim your glasses. It will help the rim to adhere if you do that right away and use the drink’s infusion time to let the sweetener and cinnamon on the rim to dry and solidify.

I use a sweetened rim and not a salted one because I actually hate most salted rims. The problem is that the rim is too weakly adhered and a lot of the salt ends up in the drink. Since no one likes a saltwater Keto Apple Pie Margarita, I either just rim part of the glass on the outside or use sweetener instead.

Ingredients

Drink

  • 6 ounces extra dry hard apple cider (store bought is ok, but make sure it is low sugar)
  • 1 1/2 ounce reposado tequila
  • 1/2 ounce lime juice (about half a medium lime)
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons erythritol (it helps to powder it in a spice grinder)
  • 4 drops stevia glycerite

Sweetened Rim

  • 2 tablespoons erythritol
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Mix all the drink ingredients in a bowl and allow to steep for 20 minutes in the fridge to allow the cinnamon to meld and infuse the drink.
  2. While the drink is infusing in the fridge, mix together the erythritol and cinnamon for the sweetened rim, placing it in a small, shallow dish. Moisten the rim of the serving glass and then dip it in the erythritol/cinnamon mixture. Let the glass dry while the drink finishes infusing.
  3. Fill your glass with ice and pour the drink.
