Loaded with B vitamins, magnesium, and zinc, these Spicy Kohlrabi Cheetos Fries may be the most nutritious thing you eat all day. All of this despite them being as addictive as your favorite cheesy junk food. They’re accidentally vegan, too!
Is Nutritional Yeast Good For You? 💪
Along with its marvelous “I can’t believe this isn’t cheese” taste, nutritional yeast packs a punch in the B vitamin department along with magnesium and zinc. Lesser but not insignificant amounts of iron, copper, and manganese sweeten the deal. Additionally, there are almost no net carbs per serving while padding your protein macro at 4g per tablespoon.
As much as I like to administer a little friendly trolling to vegans on social media, I have to admit they have a good thing going with their nutritional yeast obsession. They can count me as a fan of the tiny but tasty Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast organism.

What Do Spicy Kohlrabi Cheetos Fries Taste Like? 🍟🥦
As a member of the same botanical family as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, it shares a similar neutral flavor. The closest thing I can describe it to is a broccoli stem. It also has a consistency similar to a stem from a larger and more mature head of broccoli. In that sense, it makes a pretty good stand-in for the not-keto-friendly potato.
Its weakness is that it has an exceptionally high moisture content as compared to a potato. As a result, the fries rapidly soften after cooking or salt application. Make sure you are ready to eat as soon as they are done!
If you are looking for something a little bit crisper, you could try my deep fried kohlrabi fries. They will also work with the nutritional yeast “cheese” powder from this post. That is unless you are one of those individuals who liked the soft fries from the bottom of the pack at McDonalds. Not that there’s anything wrong with that…

What Is Kashmiri Chili Powder? 🌶
Kashmiri chili powder is about one thing, and that is the color RED. It’s made from a medium heat chili that is both smaller and rounder than a cayenne. It’s this beautiful red hue that makes it indispensable in Indian tandoori and rogan josh dishes.
The red of the Kashmiri chili powder works together with the yellow of the turmeric to punch up the pale orange of the nutritional yeast to something that screams “cheese”. It also has a good medium heat that gives the Kohlrabi Spicy Cheetos Fries an amount of spice that is not overwhelming.

Kohlrabi Spicy Cheetos Fries 🍟🧀🌶
Loaded with B vitamins, magnesium, and zinc, these Spicy Kohlrabi Cheetos Fries may be the most nutritious thing you eat all day. All of this despite them being as addictive as your favorite cheesy junk food. They’re accidentally vegan, too!
Ingredients
Ingredients
- 2 large kohlrabi
- 4 tbsp Spicy Vegan Cheetos Dust (see below)
- 1 tbsp avocado oil
Equipment
- air fryer
Instructions
-
Peel and cut the kohlrabi into fries about the thickness of steak fries, about 1/2″. Toss in a bowl with the avocado oil to coat thoroughly.
-
Air fry at 400 F degrees until crisp and browned on the outside. Be careful about taking this too far, as kohlrabi have quite a bit of moisture and will soften rapidly. If you want something even crisper, you can consider my fried version and use the nutritional yeast “cheese” powder from this post.
-
Remove to your serving container and shake the nutritional yeast “cheese” powder to coat. Consume immediately as they will soften rapidly once you apply the salty nutritional yeast “cheese” powder.

Spicy Vegan Cheetos Dust 🧀🌶🧂
This is the seasoning mix for my Spice Kolhrabi Cheetos Fries. You could definitely use them on other things, though. Maybe cucumber chips?
Ingredients
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup nutritional yeast
- 1 tbsp kashmiri chili powder (you can use any chili powder as a substitute)
- 1 tbsp kosher salt
- 1 tsp dried chives
- 1 tsp ground black pepper
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp ground thyme
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp turmeric
Equipment
- spice grinder
- large seasoning shaker
Instructions
-
Mix all ingredients in a medium bowl and then grind in batches in a spice or coffee grinder. Store in an airtight container.
Recipe Notes
You can use any chili powder as a substitute for the kashmiri powder here. I simply like its heat level and vibrant red color for this dish.
